RESTORE RELIABLE WEEKEND GO TRAIN SERVICE
To the Legislative Assembly of Ontario:
WHEREAS Metrolinx is reducing GO Train service on the Lakeshore East, Lakeshore West, Barrie and Stouffville lines beginning in September 2026, including reducing weekend service on Lakeshore East and Lakeshore West from every 15 minutes to every 30 minutes during affected periods;
WHEREAS these service reductions will mean fewer trains and longer waits for people who rely on GO Transit to get to work, attend sporting and entertainment events, visit friends and family, and travel throughout their communities;
WHEREAS “crewing constraints” were cited for reductions to weekend service on both the Lakeshore East and Lakeshore West lines in November 2025, and riders are once again facing service reductions while Metrolinx’s rail operator advances crew training and certification;
WHEREAS Metrolinx’s planned transition of GO rail operations to a Deutsche Bahn and Aecon-led operator did not proceed as planned, the operating agreement was terminated in May 2025, and Alstom remained the operator before receiving a new five-year, $1.3-billion operations and maintenance contract in March 2026;
We, the undersigned, petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as follows:
To call on the Government of Ontario and Metrolinx to address the current rail crew staffing shortfall and provide a firm date for restoring reduced GO Train service;
To call on the Government of Ontario and Metrolinx to provide additional GO Train service following major sporting and entertainment events and during other periods of high ridership to reduce passenger crowding; and
To call on the Government of Ontario to examine bringing GO rail operations and crews in-house, to provide greater accountability for staffing, training and reliable service delivery.
