Bring back the lakeshore east express train
To the Legislative Assembly of Ontario:
Whereas: commuters are more likely to choose the GO Train when it is fast, frequent, and convenient;
Whereas: riders living further outside the city, such as in Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, and Oshawa, face some of
the longest daily commutes;
Whereas: express train service on the GO Lakeshore East line was removed in September 2021 due to East
Harbour transit hub and Ontario Line construction and scheduled to return in August 2024;
Whereas: commuters have not received any clarity or timelines from Metrolinx or the Government of Ontario
on when express service will return;
Whereas: the Government of Ontario first promised to electrify GO Train service in 2018, but progress has
stalled repeatedly;
Whereas: electrifying the GO Lakeshore East line would enable faster and more frequent service, better
meeting the needs of growing communities along the corridor and reduce emissions;
Whereas: reliable and efficient transit service can ease traffic congestion on overcrowded highways and
roads;
We, the undersigned, petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as follows:
That the Government of Ontario restore express service to/from Durham Region on the GO Lakeshore
East line to better serve commuters in Durham Region; andThat the Government of Ontario proceed without further delay in electrifying the GO Lakeshore East line,
and publicly release a clear timeline with updated project milestones and delivery dates.
